March Madness is not just about basketball anymore.
The Maui Friends of NRA held the second annual dinner auction to support youth shooting sports throughout Hawaii last week and it was a major success.
There were over 160 people at the sold out event. Walk in guests were being turned away at the door. (Please buy your tickets early next year). There were even several guests from outer islands and the mainland.
About 20 students, representing the Maui County high school rifle teams, set up and volunteered at the event throughout the night. Paul Berce from St. Anthony rifle team won an air rifle and Chris Redeker won a digital camera in the student drawings.
This year there were air rifle teams at Baldwin, Hana High, Maui High, Molokai High, King Kekaulike, and St. Anthony schools. Hopefully, more schools will add rifle teams to their sports curriculum.
Boy Scouts led the guests in the Pledge of Allegiance and Marcus Ferreira, a student from Kamehameha School, blessed the food in Hawaiian.
Mike Carey, the NRA representative from Oregon, was the auctioneer for the evening. Almost everyone walked away a winner with amazing gifts and auction items.
Our table sponsors were Mark Redeker, James Geiger, Barry Aoki, Alan Brown, Stuart Belshie and Andrew Mahaney.
The next event is set for March 12, 2011 and committee members are being recruited now.
